Course Overview

As the Internet of Things (IoT) continues to expand, the need for secure, scalable, and trustworthy systems has become increasingly critical. Blockchain technology offers promising solutions by providing decentralized security, transparency, and data integrity across connected devices. This course explores the intersection of blockchain and IoT, helping professionals understand how these two powerful technologies can be integrated to solve real-world challenges in connected environments.

This course begins with a foundational understanding of both IoT and blockchain, examining the challenges IoT faces, such as device trust, data tampering, and network scalability, and how blockchain can mitigate them. You'll explore use cases, major industry players, integration architectures, consensus mechanisms, transaction confidentiality, and cryptographic techniques tailored to IoT environments. The next chapter focuses on advanced techniques and best practices, including managing vulnerabilities, handling compromised devices and defending against DDoS attacks, and physical theft. Network design principles specific to blockchain-based IoT systems are also covered. In the third section, you’ll learn how to architect systems for scale, assess whether blockchain is appropriate, select the right frameworks, and design cohesive, integrated solutions. The course concludes with guidance on further learning and implementation strategies.

By the end of this course, you’ll gain the skills to evaluate, design, and secure blockchain-powered IoT systems for scalable, real-world deployment.

David Hunter

David Hunter is a life-long technologist who believes in a future where winning organizational strategy is defined by the unique combination of human and machine capital. That means ensuring that technology acts as an enabler for business, not a constraint. He has held progressively senior positions directing globally distributed teams on high-value initiatives in the areas of operational productivity, enterprise risk management, robotic automation, resource and capacity optimization, and process re-engineering. He is currently the Global IS/IT Portfolio & PMO Manager for a premium retail boutique and e-commerce-based espresso and coffee business unit at a Switzerland-based Fortune 100. He is also a global volunteer with the Project Management Institute, contributing to certification development, and publications, and supporting the Board of Directors through the NextGen Insights Team. Previously, David was Head of Technology at an award-winning multi-billion-dollar private wealth firm for high-net-worth clientele. He has been designing scalable enterprise systems for almost two decades, helping organizations walk the line between business value and cutting-edge technology adoption. Distributed trust is always a core topic, and as a practitioner of Hyperledger Fabric, he has come to believe that is one of the most under-the-radar ecosystems for organizations of all sizes to solve many problems that were only possible with large teams and multi-million dollar budgets.
