Course Overview

In today’s hyper-connected world, where digital devices and services are seamlessly integrated into every aspect of daily life, understanding cybercrime is more essential than ever. From smartphones and smart homes to cloud platforms and social networks, our digital footprints are constantly expanding—often without us realizing the full extent of the risks involved. As new technologies emerge, so do the threats that exploit them. This course, Cybercrime and You: Staying Safe in a Hyper-Connected World, is designed to help individuals navigate these risks, understand the complex nature of cyber threats, and adopt proactive measures to safeguard themselves and others online.

This course begins with an overview of the digital ecosystem, focusing on the rise of IoT and the vulnerabilities associated with connected devices. It then delves into the fundamentals of cybercrime, examining its evolution, major types—including malware, scams, financial fraud, identity theft, and online harassment—and the impact these have on individuals and society. Learners also explore how cybercrime intersects with national security, including cyberwarfare and the manipulation of information through fake news. The course further analyzes the roles of offenders, victims, and law enforcement in the broader cybercrime landscape. In the final sections, learners are equipped with best practices for staying safe online, covering essential cyber hygiene techniques and personal protection strategies against common digital threats. Ethical considerations and the future of cybercrime wrap up the learning journey.

By the end, learners gain critical awareness of cyber risks and practical tools to protect themselves in a rapidly evolving digital world.
