Course Overview

Innovation in IT has been at an unprecedented level in the last decade. Nearly all devices and people are connected to the Internet. There are zettabytes of data flow through wired and wireless mediums. We need to secure this enormous communication. At this point, cryptography and cryptanalysis are used. Cryptanalysis is the process of decrypting ciphertexts without knowledge of the plaintext source, encryption key, or the algorithm used to encrypt it, usually performed by a “cryptanalyst.” Many organizations require cryptanalysis for deciphering encrypted malicious or benign content; penetration testers, malware analysts, forensic investigators, and incident handlers need to understand cryptanalysis to find weaknesses, fix issues, understand malicious attacks, and defend networks. 

The course covers the fundamentals of encryption, including symmetric and asymmetric encryption techniques. Participants gain a deep understanding of cryptanalysis, exploring its applications, historical context, and traditional techniques. The course focuses on various cryptanalytic attacks such as Ciphertext Only, Known-Plaintext, and Chosen Plaintext attacks. It provides hands-on experience with general cryptanalytic methods like rainbow table cryptanalysis, brute-force cryptanalysis, and slide cryptanalysis attacks. Participants learn how to perform cryptanalysis on stream ciphers, block ciphers, hash functions, and public key systems. 

Upon completion, participants will have a thorough understanding of cryptanalysis and the ability to implement various cryptanalysis techniques effectively. The course also touches upon quantum cryptanalysis, password cracking, and the role of cryptanalysis in penetration testing. Best practices for cryptanalysis are discussed, and learners are guided on how to pursue EC-Council's Certified Encryption Specialist (ECES) Certification to further their knowledge.

Emre Caglar has experience in cybersecurity for more than 10 years. Throughout his career, he worked in critical and large networks where encryption is an essential part of the security of networks. He learned cryptography and cryptanalysis by doing and excelled in his knowledge by getting a formal education from the Middle East Technical University. He is a security researcher and experienced security analyst. The author has a master’s degree in CS and is pursuing a Ph.D. in cybersecurity.
