Course Overview

Firewalls are essential components of network security, controlling incoming and outgoing traffic to protect systems from unauthorized access and malicious activity. Understanding how firewalls work and how attackers may identify weaknesses is important for penetration testers and security professionals. Tools such as pfSense, iptables, Kali Linux, Nmap, and Scapy help assess firewall configurations, evaluate network defenses, and identify security gaps in controlled environments. This course begins with an introduction to firewalls and the setup of an isolated virtual lab using pfSense, an iptables Linux host, and Kali Linux. It covers firewall fundamentals, penetration testing methodologies, reconnaissance, firewall discovery, architecture fingerprinting, access control rule analysis, and misconfiguration identification. The course then explores firewall bypass techniques involving port redirection, covert channels, HTTP and DNS tunneling, packet manipulation, IP spoofing, man-in-the-middle demonstrations, and lab-isolated denial-of-service proof-of-concepts. It also covers Python and Scapy automation, penetration testing documentation, risk assessment, remediation recommendations, firewall hardening, and preparation for further learning toward the EC-Council C|PENT certification. You will gain practical skills in firewall assessment, penetration testing, controlled bypass testing, automation, vulnerability reporting, and network defense improvement. The necessary resources for this course are in the "Resources" section of Video 1.1.

What You Will Learn

  • Deploy pfSense, an iptables Linux host, and Kali Linux virtual machines for controlled firewall security testing.
  • Use tools such as Nmap, Netcat, Hping3, and traceroute to identify firewall behavior, analyze network responses, and examine access control rules.
  • Identify common misconfigurations and understand techniques involving tunneling, port redirection, packet fragmentation, spoofing, and other controlled security tests.
  • Develop reusable scripts to assist with firewall rule discovery, packet testing, and controlled security assessment within the isolated lab.
  • Prepare penetration testing reports, prioritize risks based on business impact, recommend firewall hardening measures, and understand pathways toward further penetration testing certification.
